Lebanon: Amid
Crisis, Sabbath Services Continue
Beirut, Lebanon .... [Alex Elmadjian/MEU/ANN Staff]
[July 26, 2006] Despite the current
crisis in Lebanon, Seventh-day Adventist Christians continue to
meet
for Sabbath worship at approximately five locations every week, church
leaders say. Although Adventist facilities in Beirut have not suffered
any damage, and, as far as is known, church members have sustained no
injuries, there is understandably a level of concern among the members.
Thus, amidst the chaos, there is comfort to be found in the ability to
maintain regular routines, including weekly worship.
"All our churches in Lebanon had their regular
services last Sabbath," reports Pastor Levon Maksoudian, president of
the Adventist Church in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. "We are encouraged by
being together." "We are feeling the blessing of being together and
growing together in the Lord, even in such perilous times," says Pastor
Levon Maksoudian, president of the Adventist Church in Lebanon, Syria and
Jordan. The leadership of the Lebanese church is in constant
touch with the Seventh-day Adventist Middle
East regional headquarters in Cyprus and is collaborating on a humanitarian
project for refugees, under the auspices of the Adventist Development and
Relief Agency (ADRA). "We are gearing up for this to be quite a major
project and have already attracted some significant funding," says Conrad
Vine, secretary-treasurer of the Adventist Church in the Middle East region.
Meanwhile, the Adventists caught up in the war are receiving numerous
messages of encouragement and support. "I want to thank you all for
your prayers and
efforts to encourage us, because I believe we are together anyway even if we
are geographically apart," says Pastor Maksoudian. The leader of the
Adventist Church in the Middle East, and chair of the ADRA Middle East
board, Dr. Kjell Aune, said that it was inspiring to feel the interest and
support of the world field: "Thanks to all who have offered material support
to the church and the citizens of Lebanon. As a church we will do our part
in helping displaced persons." Aune added, "Let us also continue to
carry them forward in our prayers,
and not to forget our people in Iraq and other places, who are continuing to
suffer enormously. We pray that God may use this crisis to further bind
together the world church in general, and the Lebanese church in
particular."
Despite having suffered no physical harm, Dr. Aune says church members "are
fearful with anxiety, experiencing the reality of shortages, have limited
freedom of movement, and first and foremost, are coming to terms with the
paralyzing realization that the hope which they had built up for their
future has now gradually shattered." If you are concerned about the
whereabouts or safety of your loved-ones in Lebanon, a help desk has been
established at the Middle East Union headquarters in Nicosia, Cyprus.
E-mails can be sent to
lebinfo@adventistmeu.org, while telephone calls may be directed to +357
22871640 during office hours, or leave a voicemail message. There are
300 Seventh-day Adventist Church members in Lebanon, officials have
reported.

The Lansiquot Sisters
Visit Nassau
The dynamic Lansiquot Sisters from St Croix,
The Virgin Islands, were in Nassau this past week (July 15-23), 2006.
They
were here to attend the Marlin Awards Gospel Competition
(non-denominational) for young and upcoming artists. On Sabbath
afternoon they shared their singing talents at the joint Youth Rally held in
the parking lot of the Grant's Town Adventist Church, Nassau.
Many of us might remember them for their beautiful singing at the General
Conference Session 2005 in St Louis. The Lansiquot Sisters (Verne,
Nancy, and Chris) are three biological sister. They are among the U.S.
Virgin Islands most talented Christian music recording artists. They
have been committed to music ministry for more than ten years. They
are blessed with unique and vivid voices that captivate the hearts and souls
of listeners. On Sabbath afternoon at Grant's Town, they
certainly did captivate all the listeners with their old and new songs.
They had spark, creativity and a sweet blend that soothed the ears.

She Has A Right To
Know
This is a special article written
by Barrington Brennen, Director of Family Ministries and Adventist
Counseling Services for the Bahamas Conference. It is addressing a question
from a concerned spouse.
Question:
Dear Sir: my husband often comes home very late at nights or during the
early morning hours and refuses to say where he has been. He feels I am
insulting him when I ask where he has been. Is that right? Should I know
where he was? When I ask him why is he coming home so late, he yells out: "I
am the man around here." "Who pays the bills?" "This is my house." "Who is
taking care of you?" Should I put up with this kind of behavior? Should he
come home those hours of the morning? Signed, Frustrated Wife.

Barring any international catastrophe, it looks
like National Geographic Television is really going to broadcast the Secrets
of Revelation documentary they recorded in March. It's mind-boggling for me
to grasp that National Geographic would actually fly to the Vatican and
interview
Cardinal Stafford regarding the beast and Revelation, and then fly
up to my old cave to ask my opinion. Talk about opposite extremes!
It reminds me of the dichotomy between the priests in Jerusalem and John the
Baptist in the wilderness. (Not that I'm comparing myself with John.) I
think you already know the Amazing Facts web site has more details but just
in case you want to forward this here's the link.
http://www.amazingfacts.org/news/read_news.asp?ID=95
The first broadcast will be Sunday, July 16 at 9 p.m. (on Cable Bahamas
Channel 26). I think it's the same time all across the US
time zones. Here is the link with their schedule.
http://channel.nationalgeographic.com/channel/ET/daily/20060716.html
I'll confess I am still a little nervous about what aspects of the interview
they are going to show. They taped one entire church service and at least
two hours of interview footage. Not to mention the recording they did up in
the canyon. The whole program is only one hour so I have no idea what
segments they have included or how they have arranged them.
I see in the timing for this and incredible evangelistic opportunity! For
example, I think you know that last week Dwight Nelson and I spent a couple
of days together in Sacramento taping a half an hour program called The
Final Events Of Bible Prophecy. Right now we are planning on airing this on
a major television network during primetime. (We're shooting for 7 p.m. PAX
Network) This will be shortly after the National Geographic broadcast.
Then within a few days of this national primetime broadcast we will begin
our 10 part satellite evangelistic series. The Most Amazing Prophecies
meetings (We call it our MAP meetings.) will run from September 15-23. 3ABN
is helping us produce it but it will also be on the Hope channel. I'm
excited because this will be the 10-year anniversary from the first series
we did at Andrews University and many people say that was one of our best
meetings. During the same time as the MAP series I will be doing a week of
prayer for the students. Pray for me, that's going to be a busy week.
If we can only get people involved, these 3 major opportunities can cause
avalanche of interest in our message! All they have to do is:
- Invite friends to view the National
Geographic program.
- Invite them to view the Final Events
special.
- Give them a brochure and invite them to
attend the MAP meetings.
By the way if you know what church that wants
to participate in the Andrews satellite meetings they should register at our
web site. www.mapseminar.com .
Anyway I hope this update is useful and thanks again for your help and
prayers.

the Bahamas around the world. The amount of visitors and hits to the site
has grown a thousand fold since then. For the entire year of 1997 we
received just 7,800 hits. Now we are receiving almost 100,000 hits every
day. With an average of 2 million hits each month, we have passed 12.5
million hits for the first six months of 2006. That is more than 70,000
individuals have visited the site for the year from 151 countries. Every
week hundreds more visitors are added to the list of viewers. The site has
become one of the largest and busiest Adventist church websites in the
world.

Why are people coming to our
site? More and more individuals are hungry for the gospel of Jesus and want
to know about Him and the Christian faith in a non-threatening and safe
environment–-their homes. Our website is doing just that. The Bahamas
Conference website is simple, attractive, and user friendly. It is packed
with information that can help people become better persons spiritually,
socially, and emotionally. It is the place were members can read the weekly
Logos before it gets to the churches each week. They can know about
Adventist news locally, the Caribbean, and world-wide that will not usually
be printed in the weekly Logos. They can listen to inspirational sermons,
past conventions, joint meetings, and online radio and television stations
such as 3ABN, Hope TV, etc. Come online and be blessed. You can also add
your name to the Email ConferenceNews Letter to receive a personal weekly

United States: Federal
Court Rules For Sabbath-keeping Worker
Fayetteville, Arkansas, United States
.... [Mark A. Kellner/ANN]
[July 4, 2006] A United States federal
district court in Fayetteville, Arkansas, has ruled for a Seventh-day
Adventist who sought accommodation for his Sabbath-keeping beliefs. The
worker was awarded U.S. $311,166.75 in lost wages and punitive damages. It
is believed to be one of the few such cases in which punitive damages -
designed to "reform or deter the defendant," as one definition puts it -
have been awarded to a Sabbath-keeper.
Todd Sturgill, age 41 and a resident of
Springdale, Arkansas, was a 19-year driver for United Parcel Service when he
joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church in May of 2004. In July of that
year, Sturgill asked his employer for accommodation on Friday evenings
during the upcoming holiday delivery season. After three months, Sturgill
was told he would receive no accommodation. Though Sturgill was happy
to perform his job, his conviction about observing the Biblical Sabbath on
the seventh day of the week - which begins at sunset on Friday and ends at
sunset on the Sabbath, or Saturday - would not allow him to perform work
during that time.
Despite these roadblocks, Sturgill was able to make arrangements with his
coworkers to adjust his schedule and keep the Sabbath until Friday, Dec. 17,
2004. On that day, despite repeated requests for assistance and
accommodation, managers at the firm took no steps to enable Sturgill to
complete his work before sundown, and he returned to the
UPS center with roughly 35 undelivered parcels, and then went home. He was
fired the following Monday for what UPS called "job abandonment." The
resulting hardships hit Sturgill, his wife Judi and their two children
directly. Finding work as a mortgage broker, Sturgill saw his salary cut by
two-thirds. He said he had to "cash in" his retirement
savings, and borrow money to make ends meet during this time. However,
he added, the course of events did not diminish his convictions in
obeying God.
"Through all of this, my faith has grown. Maybe a lot of people might
want to try and blame God for what happened, but I wouldn't change a thing.
If I had lost [in court] today, I still would have been thankful for what
I'd done, standing up for what I believe," he told Adventist News Network in
a telephone interview. The June 30 ruling supports an earlier federal
court case in which an auto salesman in Arkansas, who was not a Seventh-day
Adventist, won the
right to have his Sabbatarian beliefs accommodated. "While we are
gratified over today's outcome, one message is clear," said Todd
McFarland, associate general counsel for the Seventh-day Adventist world
church. "The United States needs to enact the Workplace Religious Freedom
Act to safeguard the rights of working people."
Joining McFarland in this case were Fayetteville attorney Charles M. Kester
of the Kester Law Firm, and now-retired associate general counsel Mitchell
A. Tyner, who previously handled religious liberty issues for the
world church. Tyner noted that offerings from Seventh-day Adventist members
in North America played a part in bringing the Sturgill case to this
victory. "The Seventh-day Adventist Church takes an annual
religious liberty offering throughout North America," Tyner said, "and
part of it goes into a litigation fund for church members with religious
liberty difficulties. Todd lost his job, and two-thirds of his income. If we
had not been there to carry the ball, UPS would have gotten away with
it."
From its founding in 1863, the Seventh-day Adventist Church has
vigorously sought to defend religious freedom for all people, including
Sabbath-keepers. Today, the church works globally to protect those rights.
