This Week's Devotion
By Patrice Williams-Gordon

Twins

He has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of all creation; Col 1:13-16 RSV

"Wow!", "So cute!" "How nice!" are a few of the common comments made when twin babies are seen together, but not in Beth’s case. Strange as it may sound, she only recently met her twin sister, Ann, after many years. Some twins are separated at birth but there are many more factors that kept these two separated. They were born to different mothers, some 1836 kilometers (or 1141 miles) apart with more than ten years difference in their ages. Their physical resemblance, though apparent, pales when compared to their similarities in personalities. When together, it is not uncommon for one of them to think a thought, which the other one expresses it in words. It took them over 38 years to meet each other, yet many of their decisions made independently over the years, so closely mirror each other. Their choice in music, foods, hobbies, literature, entertainment and even wardrobe bear such striking resemblance that it amazes the onlooker. Even their choice of a husband is a blaring acknowledgment of their ‘twin-ness’, for though their husbands bear little physical resemblance (except for stature), they are decidedly ‘cut from the same cloth’.

Their similarities have made them great friends. They understand each other’s fears and pains without the need for much explanation. It must be a wonderful feeling to be understood even when you cannot efficiently articulate your own feelings. Brought together by fate, Beth and Ann have given up on the mystery of their similarities and now simply enjoy the complimenting spirits they share.

An avid believer in the fact that nothing happens in her life by chance, Beth contemplated the relevance of this phenomenon and derived two postulates that may make you smile:

God had so much fun creating one that he decided to do it twice

If God did such a great job on one, He has had ample practice to get the other close enough to perfect.

Reflecting on this true story, I am led to believe that with keen attention, everyone can find evidences of God’s unique provision for their support through a similar kindred spirit. Somewhere along the landscape of your life, are friends or family members whose personalities bear close resemblance to you in some way or the other and may prove to be an exceptional source of support. However, until you discover who these people are, I invite you to explore a universal provision that is guaranteed to take care of all your needs. Jesus understands you so well, He could be thought to be your twin brother. Though originating millions of miles away, He came to earth bearing your exact image and personality.

He enjoyed the dynamism of being human and of such relished the pleasure of friendship, good food, humor and stimulating exchanges. Though no longer physically with you, he will retain your likeness forever and continues to represent your needs to your heavenly Father. Before you even conceive a thought or struggle with a seemingly impossible situation, he knows the answer. He understands pain, rejection, fear, betrayal and even separation from God.

He was tempted in everyway that you have been and sympathizes with your weaknesses. I have found that the more time I spend with Him, the more alike we become. By far, the most exciting reality of this relationship is that all that the Father has done in Him, He can also do through you. Share your life with Him today, He understands and cares about everything that causes a frown. He has the answer to all your questions and the resources to fulfill for all your needs. Do not waste another day apart from him, you were meant for each other.
