October 13 to 15, 2006, over one hundred Spirit-filled Christian women converged on the Wyndham Nassau Resort and Crystal Palace Hotel to attend the annual Women’s Retreat sponsored by the Women’s Ministries Department of the Bahamas Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. These women who came from the United States, New Providence, and the Family Islands were of various faiths, but they all came seeking to renew their spirits through an encounter with Jesus and fellowship with one another.

The theme for the Retreat was “Becoming the Woman God Wants Me to Be.” Developing this theme, the guest speaker for the weekend, Ms Josie Oates, pointed out that “becoming” signified a journey; and the journey that the women had embarked upon was one of growth and transformation into the persons God wanted them to be. She said that God wanted them to be like Him. In the process of becoming more like Jesus, they had to be guided by three principles: prayer, faith, and sharing the love of God with others.

A special feature of the weekend was the signing of a prayer blanket.  The women were given the opportunity to write the names of their children on the prayer blanket. This was an act of faith as they prayed for God’s protection and direction in the lives of their children.

The Retreat ended with a luncheon on Sunday. The women returned to their homes with the realization that becoming the women God wants them to be is a journey and a process of growth that never ends.  Writer Natasha Ruffin
